Alaska Libertarian Party Platform
May 7, 2016 Convention – Anchorage Alaska
The Alaska Libertarian Party believes strongly in Individual Rights, Self Reliance, Limited Government, the Rule of Law, Free Markets, and Peace. We also strongly believe in the rights guaranteed in the United States Constitution protecting life, liberty, and property. We defend each person’s right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and encourage the diversity that freedom brings.
1. Personal Liberty & Role of Government
Individuals are free to make choices for themselves and are therefore responsible for the choices they make. All citizens are entitled to keep the fruits of their labor. We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal rights of others to live in whatever manner they choose.
The First Amendment defends our right to the freedom of expression. Libertarians believe government controls that limit the free exchange of information via any media, are an encroachment of these rights.
3. Personal Privacy
The Fourth Amendment protects our right to be secure in our person, home, and property. Libertarians are cautious and skeptical when government desires to trade privacy for security.
The US Constitution protects our individual right to defend our life, liberty, and justly-acquired property against aggression and tyranny.
5. Economic Liberty
Libertarians advocate for free market opportunities for all. A free market driven by individual choices will naturally allocate resources, based on supply and demand, more efficiently than a market controlled by the government. The proper role of government in the economic realm is to protect property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected.
Libertarians support freeing property owners from government restrictions on their rights to fully control, use, dispose of, or in any manner enjoy, their property as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. A respect for property rights is fundamental to maintaining a free and prosperous society.
Responsible stewardship of the environment begins with a vigorous effort to expand private property rights. We support a clean and healthy environment that pursues an achievable balance between development and conservation.
The free market should drive the supply and demand for various forms of energy. Tampering with, artificially controlling, taxing, and subsidizing energy is not a proper or healthy role of government.
9. Monetary Policy and Spending
Libertarians favor free-market banking, with unrestricted competition among banks and depository institutions of all types. Congress should not spend more than the United States raises in revenue and we must cease the practice of borrowing money from foreign nations or entities to pay for domestic debts and overspending as it weakens the dollar and our economic capacity.
Education is best provided by the free market and will achieve greater quality and efficiency with more diversity of choice and competition at the most local level possible. The means of educating children is a parental right, not a governmental responsibility. Libertarians work to restore authority to parents to determine the education of their own children.
11. Health Care
We favor a free market health care system. Libertarians recognize that Health Care and Health Insurance are not the same thing. Restoring and reviving a free market health care system is the most effective way to lower costs and expand service coverage to as many citizens as possible. Individuals should be free to determine the level of health insurance they want.
Retirement planning is the responsibility of the individual, not the government.
13. Defense and Security
Maintaining a strong, voluntary military force is necessary to provide defense against aggression.
14. Self-Determination and Representative Government
Alaska Libertarians support the process of interposition and nullification of laws, which violate the U.S. Constitution or are detrimental to the sovereign rights of the State of Alaska.
15. Alaska Lands
Alaska Libertarians support the end of federal control and land claims that encroach on the sovereignty of the State of Alaska.
Any other activity, issue, or position by government not mentioned in the Alaska Libertarian Party platform shall not be construed as acceptance of those items.
